Details on this are sketchy, but, as I understand it, United Church of Canada minister, Robert Matton, has been "fired" for his support for / involvement in the clergy union. Unless there are some other factors we do not know about this is an appalling situation. The folk at Binbrook-Blackheath pastoral charge [= parish] voted to terminate Matton's call there "without cause", based on his union involvement. Because in the United Church parishes cannot hire and/or fire on their own, the recommendation went to the presbytery [= regional body] last Tuesday. He spoke, As did his wife Lois. No doubt others as well I don't know the outcome of the presbytery meeting - whether they upheld the congregation's recommendation or not.

The idea of a clergy union created some controversy - as well as some jokes - over the last few years. [It didn't grow out of any financial concerns, but rather some of the church practices which put clergy at risk and offer them little protection]. One of the best summaries was done by Christian Week [here]. It doesn't matter much, though, whether one thinks the idea of a union for clergy is great or stupid, it is clear that no one should lose his/her position as a result of associating with a trade union, it is clear that in a church that declares itself to "seek justice and resist evil" such a move denies justice and so empowers evil.
Funny ... the comments offered in the pamphlet supporting Rev. Matton are almost verbatim the SAME comments offered in support of me and ignored by my presbytery too ...
Too many of us suffer the slings and arrows this way and no one seems to care ... over and over this keeps strengthening the NEED for a Union to address this madness ...

As a former United Church minister (who resigned on his own initiative), I'm horified at the extent of the church's harrassment. I understand Dr. Matton has since deceased. The United Church has paid lip service to their support of union activities. Every once in a while, the United Church has to destroy one of their own, pour encourager les autres.
